A Tunic of Many Colors
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors.
— Genesis 37:3
Wonderful truths and types of the love of God our Father and of the Lord Jesus Christ are hidden in the Old Testament stories. Even a garment points to His many-sided and boundless love for us. The Lord loves to hide truths. He is like a loving dad and mum who carefully hide presents under the tree for Christmas and New Year, so that they can rejoice with their child when he opens them. In the same way our Daddy rejoices when we open His gifts and come to know the depth of the love of Christ.
The book of Genesis says that Israel loved his son Joseph and so gave him a tunic of many colors. This is a very interesting word — many colors. In Hebrew the word is pas, which comes from a word meaning the palm of the hand. The fingers of a hand are not of different colours, but they are all of different sizes, so it would be more accurate to call the garment Israel gave his son a tunic of many sizes. Perhaps such an expression makes little sense, but it reflects the love of our heavenly Daddy very well.
Jesus said to His disciples: “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.” (Jhn.15:9) Our heavenly Daddy clothed Jesus in a tunic of many sizes, and Jesus gave this tunic to us, His disciples. He also told us not to take it off. Why is the tunic of many sizes? Because, like the love of God, it is very wide, very long, very high and very deep.
Looking at God’s palm, we can see not only that its fingers are of different sizes, but also that there is a hole right through its middle. That is how Jesus proved Daddy’s love to us, when His palms were pierced with nails. And through this hole we can see a many-coloured rainbow, which reminds us that Daddy God will never again be angry with us or rebuke us, but will love us forever and rejoice with us when we, His beloved children, open His precious gifts.
Prayer
Dear and beloved Daddy! I thank You for the love You have given me in Christ Jesus. The pierced palms of Jesus are irrefutable proof of Your boundless love for me. They say that You are always on my side, always care for me, and whatever happens in my life, I know and believe that You will turn it to my good. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit, who, like a warm many-coloured tunic, wraps me and keeps me warm in Your strong love.
