Jesus Is Comforted by His Love for You
Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent; and he took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
— Genesis 24:67
In all the stories we find in the Old Testament, wonderful truths are hidden that reveal our Lord Jesus Christ, His glory and His great love for us. One of them, described in chapter 24 of the book of Genesis, is the beautiful story of how Abraham’s servant found a bride for his son Isaac. In this story all kinds of types and truths are hidden behind every character.
Abraham is our heavenly Father, the father of many nations, who did not spare His beloved Son but gave Him up to death on the cross for us, so that we could live forever and enjoy His love. The servant is the Holy Spirit, who is always at work, always seeking God’s lost treasures and bringing them to the Lord. Isaac is the only beloved Son of the heavenly Father, our dear Lord Jesus. Sarah is the grace of God, which came down from heaven in the body of Jesus Christ. (Jhn.1:17) Sarah’s tent is the tent of grace, the new body of the risen Christ Jesus. And Rebekah is you, His precious and beloved bride.
When Jesus was going to the cross to die for our sins, He said to His disciples: “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death…” (Mat.26:38) But when our heavenly Isaac rose again and the Holy Spirit brought the first Rebekah to Him, the Lord said to her lovingly: “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” (Jhn.20:15) She did not recognise Him, because she was wearing a veil. (Gen.24:65; Jhn.20:14) When the Day of Pentecost came, He brought her into the tent of grace by sending from heaven the Comforter, who fills our hearts with the love of God. Every time we receive the Spirit of grace, we receive His love, and He is comforted by it.
We often try to keep away from the Lord out of fear, thinking that He will condemn us for our bad deeds or point out our shortcomings. But the truth is that He simply wants to fill your heart with His boundless love. So, dear friend, don’t be afraid to come to the Lord and spend time with Him; don’t run away from His love for you. Perhaps you have been hurt by people close to you and have closed your heart, but the love of Jesus is not like that. The epistle to the Corinthians says that love “does not seek its own…” (1 Cor.13:5) In loving you, the Lord seeks not His own good but yours, and with all His heart He wants you, too, to be comforted by His love for you.
Prayer
Daddy, thank You for sending the Comforter, who found me and brought me to my beloved Bridegroom. Thank You, my Beloved, for pouring Your love into my heart, and we are comforted by it. My heart overflows with joy, knowing that You always carry me in Your arms, as a bridegroom carries his beloved bride.
