We can take possession of our inheritance — the promised land, the land of rest — only when the veil of the law has been taken from our eyes. The Lord said to Abraham, after he had parted from Lot, whose name means veil: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are; northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you” [Gen.13:14-15] The place where Abraham was is the place of rest — the land of Canaan. [Gen.13:12]

A legalistic, old covenant mindset always drives a person to all kinds of works. The question is always before his eyes: “If I don’t do it, who will?” On the other hand, the revelation of Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross gives a person rest. Only by abiding in God’s rest — our promised land — can we walk in the Spirit, bear fruit to God and have a close relationship with the Lord like the one Abraham had.
