The Father Who Speaks in Righteousness
Who is this who comes from Edom, With dyed garments from Bozrah, This One who is glorious in His apparel, Traveling in the greatness of His strength?— “I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”
—Isaiah 63:1
When we read chapter 63 of Isaiah, we can see God treading grapes in the winepress. Treading in His anger and trampling in His fury. “For the day of vengeance is in My heart, And the year of My redeemed has come.“
As I read this, my heart stood still: here it is, the wrath of God: “I have trodden down the peoples in My anger, Made them drunk in My fury, And brought down their strength to the earth.” (The Hebrew word translated “strength” here is the same word that verse 3 translates “blood”: He poured out their blood on the earth.)
How? Knowing my heavenly Father, His love… my mind stopped…
“I have trodden down the peoples in My anger” — the phrase kept repeating in my head.
My spirit cried out: “Father!” — and the veil fell from my eyes. And now I see everything with different eyes. With the eyes of His love for me. And I read again: “Who is this who comes from Edom, With dyed garments from Bozrah, This One who is GLORIOUS IN HIS APPAREL, TRAVELING IN THE GREATNESS OF HIS STRENGTH?
— I WHO SPEAK IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, MIGHTY TO SAVE.
Why is Your apparel red, And Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?” The heavenly Father, who speaks in righteousness and is mighty to save, came to save us! Only He had the power to do it. And He went into the winepress to tread — to tread what? The grapes (Jesus, crucified on the cross for us). He trod Him in anger. Jesus took on Himself all the sins of the world and bore the punishment for us! And God trod down the peoples in His anger, hating sin and defending His children. “Made them drunk in My fury“, He says, and He poured out their blood on the earth. And I remembered how Jesus was given sour wine (vinegar) to drink and said: “It is finished!” Jesus took the generational curses on Himself for us [Jer.31:29]. And Jesus’ side was pierced, and blood and water poured out on the ground [Jhn.19:34]. Just as blood and water come out when a mother gives birth to a child, so the church was born when the blood was poured out on the earth.
Here He is, my Father, in all His Glory and generosity! He came to save, not to destroy. And from the seventh verse you can read on: “I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD And the praises of the LORD, According to all that the LORD has bestowed on us“.
