By tradition it is thought that the Lord’s Supper took place on the same evening as the Old Testament Passover meal, or, as the Jews call it, the Passover Seder.

That is why it is said that there was lamb and bitter herbs on the table for Jesus and His disciples. All this came from an interpretation of the following passage of Scripture: “His disciples said to Him, ‘Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?’” [Mar.14:12] The Old Testament mindset understands “preparing the Passover” as: the lamb, unleavened bread and bitter herbs. [Exd.12:8] The New Testament mindset understands “preparing the Passover” as: the bread and the cup [1 Cor.11:23-25].

Scripture says nothing about Jesus and His disciples eating lamb with bitter herbs at the Supper. The events of the last days before the cross are illustrated in more detail in the attached chart. The events in the Gospels are compared with events in the Old Testament, which are only types and a shadow of the reality, that is, of Christ.
