In Gospels we can find that Jesus preached the Law for those who boasted in their obedience to God, but He revealed the grace for disobedient sinners. The following two stories are a perfect example of this.

In one story the young rich ruler wanted to know how to possess the eternal life. Jesus answered him: “You know the commandments, keep them…”. “All these things I have kept from my youth,” – answered young man. Then Jesus offered him to sell everything that he had, distribute to the poor and then come and follow Him. In other words, Jesus showed to the rich ruler that he broke the first commandment: “You shall have no other gods before Me”, because his god was mammon or money. Many believers think that the Law was supposed to lead him to repentance, but he didn’t repent and left sorrowful. (Luke 18:18-23)

In another story the rich ruler of tax collectors named Zacchaeus, who often stole money, wanted to see Jesus. Jesus went to his house to dine and in this act Jesus showed him His grace. Zacchaeus didn’t deserve to sit with honored Rabbi at the same table. Jesus said nothing about the Law or commandments. He didn’t say to Zacchaeus: “You know that its forbidden to steal.” And what was the result? The grace of Jesus lead Zacchaeus to repentance, because he said that he will restore fourfold what he stole. He also said that he will give half of his goods to the poor. (Luke 19:1-10)

It is very important how you see our Lord Jesus. If you see Him giving commandments and demanding obedience, then you always will be sorrowful as the young rich ruler. On the other hand, if you see Jesus showing you His grace, then you will be joyful and you will hear Him saying to you: “You also are a son of Abraham!”
